A beautiful portfolio gets a photographer on your short list. The right questions are what get them hired.
Before you book a wedding photographer, ask who will photograph your wedding, exactly what is included, how many images you will receive and when, what backup plans are in place, and how the album process works. The answers reveal far more than a highlight reel ever could — they tell you how experienced the photographer is, how your day will feel, and what you will actually hold in your hands afterward.
Who will actually photograph our wedding?
This is the most important question, and the one couples forget to ask. Ask how long they have been photographing weddings, how many they photograph in a year, and whether you can see a complete gallery from a single wedding, not just the best frames. Consistency across an entire day matters more than a handful of perfect portraits.
What is included — and what is not?
Two collections with the same number of hours can be entirely different experiences. Ask how many photographers and assistants are included, when coverage begins and ends, whether an engagement session is included, and what planning support you receive before the wedding. Then ask what costs extra: additional hours, a second photographer, albums, wall art, travel. A clear answer here prevents every surprise later.
How and when will we receive our images?
Ask for specifics: how many edited images you can expect, how long full-gallery delivery takes, whether you receive sneak peeks and when, and how the gallery is delivered. Also ask who edits the images and whether the editing style you see in the portfolio is applied to every image or only select ones. At Idalia, for example, sneak peeks arrive within 24–48 hours, the full gallery of roughly 800–1,000 edited images is typically ready within five to six weeks, and every image is refined by the studio’s dedicated post-production team — led by Jay Peterson for weddings — in the same signature style.
What happens if something goes wrong?
Professionals have answers ready for this one. Ask about liability insurance and whether they can provide a certificate for your venue. Ask about backup equipment, backup files, and what happens if the photographer is ill or has an emergency on your wedding day. A studio team has built-in answers — backup photographers, assistants, systems. A solo photographer should still have a clear emergency plan and be able to describe it.
How does the album and artwork process work?
Many couples assume an album is included and discover later that it is not. Ask whether an album is included, what size and page count, who designs it, how many rounds of revisions you receive, and how long it takes. If albums matter to you, this conversation belongs before booking, not after. Every Idalia collection includes a custom-designed album, and couples walk through the design with a specialist at a virtual Reveal and Ordering appointment.
