Protecting Your Wedding Images

Heirlooms

Your wedding images are priceless. These photos are more than files — they’re memories you’ll revisit for years, share with loved ones, and pass on to future generations. Because of that, it’s important to intentionally protect them so they’re safe, accessible, and preserved beautifully over time.

Here’s how to care for them the right way:

Download Your Gallery (And Don’t Wait!)

Before anything else, download all the high-resolution files from your online gallery to your computer or device. Galleries stay active for one year but don’t wait that long to download your images – you can never be too safe!

💡 Pro Tip: Do this as soon as you receive your final gallery link.

Make Multiple Backups (Seriously — Multiple)

A single copy on your computer is not enough.

The modern standard for digital preservation is the “3-2-1” rule:

  • 3 copies of your images

  • 2 different types of storage (cloud + physical)

  • 1 copy stored off-site in a separate location

This protects your photos in case of computer crashes, lost devices, theft, or disasters.

Examples:

  • Main copy on your computer

  • External hard drive in your home

  • Cloud storage (Backblaze, iCloud, Google Drive, etc.)

💡 Store one external backup at a friend or family member’s home or in a safe deposit box.

Use Cloud Storage for Peace of Mind

Cloud backup services are excellent because they automatically protect your images and keep them accessible from anywhere.

Popular options include:

  • iCloud

  • Google Drive / Photos

  • Dropbox

  • Backblaze

Cloud storage also reduces risk of data loss if your devices fail or are lost.

Get your photos on your walls

Putting photos on your walls is more than decoration — it’s protection through visibility. When your favorite images are framed and displayed, they become part of your everyday life, not “forgotten files on a hard drive.”

Make Parent Albums

One of the best ways to say “thank you” to your parents for their love and support during your wedding planning (and more) is through a parent album. Your wedding day is such an important day for you and your spouse, but it’s just as important to your parents! As a parent myself now, nothing would make me happier after my daughter’s wedding than to have an album of her wedding day to re-live again and again, and I’m sure any parent would feel the same way. After all, I think you can agree that parents don’t want to sit in front of a computer looking at an online gallery. Parents, more than anyone, value tangible albums that you can touch and feel, and I don’t blame them! Looking through our wedding album is always so special to me.

Print Your Images

There’s something magical about reminiscing about your wedding day while looking through a set of professional prints. It’s also important to remember that technology advances so fast (remember floppy disks?) so it’s important to have tangible versions of your images. Photographs are not meant to just live on your computer – they are meant to be printed. Find time to print your favorite images from the day and keep them in a print box. You’ll be happy you did! You can print standard sizes of your images right from your online gallery. Large wall portraits can be purchased through our studio – contact us if you’d like custom artwork.

Refresh Your Backups Every Few Years

Digital storage evolves. Hard drives fail over time, formats change, and devices become obsolete (remember CDs and DVDs?). It’s a good idea to review and refresh your backups every few years so nothing becomes inaccessible later.

Bottom Line

Your wedding photos are valuable — not just emotionally, but historically for your family. Taking a few intentional steps now to preserve them ensures they stay safe, organized, accessible, and beautiful for years to come.
